Weekend events

During the holiday season Dyker Heights Brooklyn has a big display of Christmas lights on houses. A small tour could be try 84th Street between 11-12th Avenue, walk to 82nd Street till 10th Avenue.                                                                                                                    Saturday: Santa Parade 1pm, McCarran Park, Green Market 1–2pm.   Calling Santas, elves, reindeer and toys of all shapes and sizes.  There’s a (costumed) Santa Parade for kids (young & old) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  It starts at 1 PM at Leonard Street between Manhattan Ave & Bayard Street.  Led by Santa and Hungry March Band through McCarren Park to the Greenmarket, where merry caroling will follow. Parade & park festivities free. While not required, they  ask everyone to bring an unwrapped toy for a Santa toy drive.                                            High Line Holiday Concert 2–3 pm. Sing-along.                                            Sunday: Nature Exploration Hike (Light) 10am.  Discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forests and wetlands.  Salt Marsh Nature Center (in Marine Park), Brooklyn.                                                                                                          The Wild Garden: Discovering Central Park Woodlands,  Exhibit 10am-5pm Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (in Central Park), This event repeats every week on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday till 2/28/2013. Use this hands-on exhibit to illuminate the history, ecology, and management of the woodlands and learn why these landscapes are so essential to the purpose of Central Park. The exhibit includes a digital interactive app highlighting historic photos and revealing hidden features.                               Woodland Discovery Kit in Central Park 10 am-5p.m.  Exhibit and exploring the North Woods on your own by borrowing a North Woods Discovery Kit stocked with binoculars, a hand lens, and flora/fauna guides. Accompanying adult with valid ID required. Purchase an optional Discovery Journal for $2 for a one-of-a-kind woodland adventure. Recommended for ages 8–12. This event repeats every week on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and till 2/28/2013.                                                                                                                        Boats, Balls, Bikes & Blades Outside the Dairy Gift Shop (in Central Park), Manhattan 12:30-1:45 pm. Fondly recollect the early decades of baseball, recall ladies riding sidesaddle along the bridle paths, envision the thrill of ice skating and boating on the Lake, cross the finish line of the NYC Marathon.  Learn how tastes in recreation have changed since the mid-19th century and how the Park has been changed to mirror those tastes.
