Saturday’s Global Festival in Central Park’s Great Lawn had an estimated 60,000 in attendance. Most tickets were free, fans earned sharing information about extreme poverty on social media and through a lottery. Global Festival is a massive advocacy as world leaders gather for this year’s UN General Assembly in fighting poverty and progress eradication of polio. At the concert, stats announced that every minute we lose a child under five to preventable diseases and 300,000 women die every year of poverty. The five hour concert started with a video from Beyonce. Unannounced was John Legend and playing “Imagine” alone at a piano. It is a John Lennon song who lived blocks away from the Great Lawn at the Dakota Apartments. The finale was Neil Young and the Crazy Horse Band. He is well known from being in the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. They appeared at Woodstock. Young is an alto or a high tenor and uses a claw hammer acoustic guitar style which is a ragged and melodic sound. The fingers are like a claw and banjo style. The group’s final song was their best with “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Young had slashing power chords, crashes, squeals and a monster riff. Some songs were too long and at the end of one there was an additional 5 minutes of a thunder noise but it did not cause rain. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters Grohl announced it was the band’s last show for a while. Rapper K’Naan sang his refugee anthem “Waving Flag which has been used for the World Cup and as a super group charity single for the Haiti earthquake. The 4 jumbotrons had colorful backgrounds.
